Assisstive technology

This is defined as any item or piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve the function capabilities of a person. (Cook and Hussy, 1995)

Assisstive technology that I looked at and really liked was the lightwriter. Lightwriters are small, robust, portable text-to-speech communication aids specially designed to meet the particular and changing needs of people with speech loss resulting from a wide range of acquired, progressive and congenital conditions. Lightwriters are reassembly expensive at around $6000. This makes it a hard for some people to be able to afford. Lightwrites are amazing for people with speech problems as they open up a whole new way of communicating with people.

A web community that I am interested in is facebook. This can be found by going http://www.facebook.com/

Facebook is a free social networking website launched in February 2004 and operated and privately owned by Facebook, Users can add people as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized by workplace, school, or college. Anyone age 13 or older can become a Facebook user.

Facebook is a very interactive site allowing friends to connect with each other and share information. People contribute by adding photos or videos of themselves which then can be viewed by their friends. Friends can also write on other friends walls and send them private messages. It is very much run by the user.

Topics that are discussed on facebook is things such as what the person is doing or the person writing to a friend asking them how they are etc. A lot of people use it to catch up with people that they have not seen for a long time an example of a message is...
Hi Melissa how are you it has been a long time since I have seen you! What are you studying?? It would be lovely to catch up with you.

Ethical issues that may arise are that the information put on facebook can be viewed by all your friends, which makes it a very public place. so privacy is an issue. It is important to be careful what you put on facebook as it could become the latest gossip. Photos are also uploaded to facebook it is important that you have the people in the photos permission to put them on the site as anyone can view these photos.

Facebook is a great way for friends all over the world to stay in touch with each other. This is because you are able to view each others page and see photos of each other and write messages. It is a great way for people to stay in touch and feel that they are not out of the loop. It has no geographical limits.

A disadvantage of facebook is that you are not having face to face contact with a person. This means that social skills are not being developed and may result in a community that does not know how to communicate with each other.

In class we have been learning to make an edit a short film. In groups we were required to edit a a film and create special effects. We then created a youtube account and put the movie on it.

Youtube vidios are loaded onto the internet off your computer. Youtube offers a wide range of other peoples work to watch, it is a way people can connect with each other and share information.

Storyboard- we were required to use storyboard in our films, which is a serious of drawings of the proposed film. It is the plan of the production, and every scene should be planned carefully so when filming begins everyone knows what to do.

A blog is a a web site that you use to write information or just really anything that you want to about anything. It is your site that you can do as you please. A blog can be used as your diary, a daily pulpit, a collaboration space, political soapbox, news outlet, your private thoughts or memos of the world. A blog is whatever you want it to be and there are no rules. What you post shows up at the top of your page and visitors can read it and comment on it or link to your email. Blogs have been around since 1999 and have helped shape the web, impacted politics, shaken up kournalism and enabled millions of people to have a voice and connect with others.
You can also upload photos onto your account from your computer easily.
You can also use your mobile phone to send text and update your blog while you are on the go.
A blog is so easy to get started it takes only about 5 minutes and is very easy to get the hang of.

Blogging is a great way to connect with friends and share your thoughts or viewpoints. It is a safe way because you can control who sees your blog and you can delete old posts from it.

Blogging is fun and can be made personal by designing your own page with the colours that you want. You can also add fun gadgets such as fish that follow the mouse to be feed.

Another type of blog is facebook, which is were friends can post comments on each others page and add photos of what they have been doing. Facebook is safe because you add your friends and only they can view your page and photos. It is a good way to stay in contact with people.

Tutorial Two Digital camera and applications

There are both pluses and minuses of using digital cameras. The pluses are that they are easy to use, and anyone is able to use them without training. They offer a clear picture of the photo and you are able to select what photos you like and delete the photos that you do not like in a fast manner. The photo is able to be viewed straight after the photo is taken. The photos can also be uploaded onto a computer and printed off or saved. It is easy to get the photos printed off at a photo shop by using the memory card. Most digital cameras can be charged or run on batteries this can be both an advantage or disadvantage as they need to be charged regularly. The cameras are usually small and can be carried around easily. A disadvantage about digital cameras is that they can be expensive to buy.

Digital cameras photos can be stored on the camera with a memory card. The memory card can hold a large amount of photos, which can also be very easily deleted to make space for new photos. The memory card can also fit into the computer and the photos can be transferred and saved on the computer and used for further usage. A connection cord from the camera to the computer can also be used to transfer the photos from the camera to the computer. The computer can store the photos and also display the photos, the photos can also be manipulated on the computer with different computer functions that can change the physical structure of the photo.

When taking photos and using photos it is very important to ask the people involved for their permission in using their photo. If wanting to put the photo on the internet permission must be given otherwise this is unethical practice.

The use of digital images for occupational therapy is increasing as this is a very beneficial and effective way to practice. This is because photos can be used for environmental assessments and give the OT a photo that they can refer back to when they are writing up the assessment. Photos can also be used to show staff the correct way equipment is to be used with clients.

Flickr is an image hosting and video hosting website, web services suite, and online community. In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs, the service is widely used by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media. As of October 2009, it claims to host more than 4 billion images.

A site like Flickr is photobucket. With photobucket upload all your photos, videos, and images for free. Make photo slideshows to share with friends. Host and share videos with us: we are one of the most popular video-hosting sites in the world. Plus, find and share the best MySpace icons for profile layouts.

Optical zoom lenses physically extend to magnify your subject. A motor controls the lens movement. When you press the switch to "W" or "T," the subject is either magnified or reduced in size. The "W" stands for "wide-angle" (reduce). The "T" stands for "telephoto" (magnify).

Digital zoom crops your image and magnifies the result of the cropping. This magnification process is called interpolation. To make the cropped area bigger, digital zoom makes up, or interpolates, pixels to add to the image, which may give less than satisfactory results.

A megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels. A pixel is an individual element of a digital image. The number of megapixels determines the resolution of an image, and a digital image with more megapixels has more resolution.
Because digital cameras now often have the ability to create photographs containing 10 million or more pixels, megapixel is the preferred method for measuring resolution. In a list of digital camera specifications, you'll often see "MP" used as the abbreviation for megapixel.

Tutorial 1 Technology and Ethical issues.

Information technology (IT) is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of infotech". Information technology is a general term that describes any technology that helps to produce, manipulate, store, communicate, and/or disseminate information.
Wikipedia. (2010). Retrieved June 3, 2010, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology

This definition of IT explains to us what IT is. By looking at this definition it is clear that IT is used everyday in society whether we realise it or not. IT has become a very important part of society as it helps us to communicate with each other for example the use of cellphones for ringing and texting. Computers are widely used now by majority of people for work purposes and also as a communication tool such as facebook and email. It is now clear that IT as scary as the word seems it is all around us and is used widely by all of us for everyday functions.

I feel confident in using IT that I feel is useful to me and also beneficial. I do not see the point in using technology that I do not see a point to. I use a cellphone as a way to communicate with friends a and family, I also use a computer for my school work and the internet for researching and email and facebook. I find this IT to be very beneficial as it helps me to keep up to date with school work but also communicate with the outside world that I would not normally be able to do if iot was not for IT. I also love to use a camera and record what I have been doing, I do not know a lot about cameras but find using a basic one very fun.

IT is being used in occupational therapy practice greatly. This is by the forms of computer for writing up notes and also using the Internet for communicating by email with clients and also medical providers such as enable. The internet is also used in practice as a way to research client conditions and to look at equipment that is available and also make orders of equipment. IT also is very exciting for clients as adaptive technology can be produced to help clients do things that they normally could not. This is by the use of using communication devices that help the client to be able to communicate with other people. Also technology can be used for helping people to take part in activities that would be impossible if they did not have IT such as things like switches that help them to control equipment.

Ethical implications can arise from using IT. This is because IT is not always 100 percent safe and confidential. Information put on the internet can be accessed by other people and emails can often get into the wrong hands. As OTs it is important to take this into account and to not put personal client information in emails etc. When using the internet it is important to remember to not put personal information on there. Cellphones can also cause an ethical problem as texts can get into the wrong hands and also sometimes they may not send or can even go to the wrong person if not careful. It is very important when using IT to be careful and not to abuse the purpose of it.

The more specific term “computer ethics” has been used to refer to applications by professional philosophers of traditional Western theories like utilitarianism, Kantianism, or virtue ethics, to ethical cases that significantly involve computers and computer networks. “Computer ethics” also has been used to refer to a kind of professional ethics in which computer professionals apply codes of ethics and standards of good practice within their profession. In addition, other more specific names, like “cyberethics” and “Internet ethics”, have been used to refer to aspects of computer ethics associated with the Internet.

Intellectual property is a product of the intellect that has commercial value, including copyrighted property such as literary or artistic works, and ideational property, such as patents, appellations of origin, business methods, and industrial processes.

Social justice is fair and proper administration of laws conforming to the natural laws that all persons, irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, possessions, race, religion, etc., are to be treated equally and without prejudice.

Social justice definition. (2010). Retrieved June 3, 2010, from http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/social-justice.html

Informed consent is when information is given with full knowledge of the risks involved, probable consequences, and the alternatives

Informed consent. (2010). Retrieved June, 3, 2010, from http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/informed-consent.html

It is important for us to understand ITC and ethical issues in our daily lives. This is because is makes us aware of our rights and other peoples rights it also helps us to understand our boundaries of what we are and not able to do with IT. IT is so common with our everyday lives that we need to understand and be aware of safety of us and other people when using the technology.
